Station Owner Portal
Project and Role
The station owner portal is used by owners to configure and troubleshoot their stations. The existing portal became complicated with the addition of many features, and I was tasked with redesigning the portal to better meet the needs of our users. My responsibilities included: conducting research, designing the interaction, and creating final visual design. I identified elements that could be standardized into a design system and collaborated with two designers who work on our design system. I started off with a key section of the portal, and we are extending the new design to other sections. I am managing the work of a designer who is working on these other sections.
Design
We conducted research with station owners to understand what they were using the portal for. Station owners mainly wanted to configure their stations, and to troubleshoot them in case there was a problem with the station. We found that the existing portal had made both these tasks a bit cumbersome by burying them under layers of navigation. Station owners calling ChargePoint support for both these tasks.
Existing Design:
In order to configure or troubleshoot a station, owners will need to find the station first, and then go to the details of the station. My design focused on making these two tasks simple.
The existing portal had a complex tree structure to browse for stations, and the search didn’t look like the primary way to find stations. In my design, I made search prominent. I simplified the tree structure and changed into two selections for browsing: City and Site. Station owners think of their station locations in terms of sites, and I incorporated this into the design.
In the new design, the stations are easy to access in a list. On selecting a station, owners get access to the details of the station. To provide the most relevant information to users, the status of the station is shown prominently, and the station settings are available underneath. Users can view the settings, and tap on the edit button to change them. I designed the station details page with elements similar to the station details page in the mobile app for drivers. I helped establish a design system across products.
New Design:
To extend the new design from the stations section to all of the portal, I did a catalog of all of the different screens in the portal. Through the catalog, I was able to identify common elements for our design system: Table, Section / Cards, List View etc. We are redesigning other pages in the portal, and I am managing the work of another designer and ensuring that the design is standardized across the portal.
Impact
We tested the redesign with users, and they responded well to the changes. We are in the process of implementing them.
